Multiple Response
The learner should select all the correct answers from several alternatives. There can be more than one correct answer in the list.
Scoring by result or by choice affects how points are calculated.
If By Result is selected, each incorrect choice will lower the total score (percentage) for that question.
Let’s look at an example. The question has five answer options, two of which are correct:
"What are chimpanzees?"
- mammals (correct)
- primates (correct)
- insects (incorrect)
- reptiles (incorrect)
- mollusks (incorrect)
The following formula is used:
Where:
- A = number of correct answers chosen
- B = number of incorrect answers chosen
- C = total number of correct answers
- QS = maximum score for the question
To get 100% on this question, the learner needs to select answers 1 and 2:
A = 2, B = 0, C = 2 → 2 / (0 + 2) = 100%.
Other examples:
The learner selects answers 1, 2, and 3. Out of the three selected, only two are correct. So, A = 2, B = 1, C = 2. The result is: 2 / (1 + 2) = 2/3 = 66.7%.
The learner selects answer 1. Out of the two correct answers, only one was chosen. So, A = 1, B = 0, C = 2. The result is: 1 / 2 = 50%.
The learner selects answers 1 and 3. This includes one correct and one incorrect answer. So, A = 1, B = 1, C = 2. The result is: 1 / (1 + 2) = 1/3 = 33.3%.
The learner selects all five answers, but only two were correct. So, A = 2, B = 3, C = 2. The result is: 2 / (3 + 2) = 2/5 = 40%.
Scoring By Choice allows you to assign specific points for correct and incorrect options.
Learners will earn the number of points you assign. This method is stricter because you can assign negative scores for answers.
Let’s look at the same example, now with individual points:
"What are chimpanzees?"
mammals (+10)
primates (+10)
insects (−20)
reptiles (−20)
mollusks (−20)
If the learner selects only option 2, they get 10 points.
If they select both correct options, they get 20 points.
If they select two correct answers and one incorrect answer, they will receive a penalty and score zero points.
To add this question, go to the Question menu and click Multiple Response.
You can add as many answer options as you want by clicking on the Type to add a new choice field. Specify the correct answer using the checkboxes in the Correct column and, if necessary, edit the texts of the answer options.
Remove answer choices by clicking Delete on the right.
To change the order of answers, click and hold the button with four vertical pointsnext to the answer choice you want to move, and drag it to the desired location. In addition, you can use the context menu to move answers up and down.
If you have set scoring By Choice, you can specify points for each of the answers.
